Newcomer Catherine Laga’aia takes on the role of the courageous young heroine, while Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the mighty demigod, having previously voiced the character in the animated version released in 2016 and its sequel set for 2024. The latest trailer highlights Maui, showcasing his muscular physique, flowing hair, and iconic tattoos. Viewers can catch a glimpse of Johnson's portrayal in the film's trailer below!
First Look at Dwayne Johnson as Maui in the Trailer
Disney shared the trailer on social media, featuring the tagline, "The ocean chose her for a reason." In this live-action adaptation, Moana, a teenager from the island of Motunui, embarks on a quest to restore Te Fiti's stolen heart, aided by the determined Maui. Catherine Laga’aia is making her film debut as Moana, while Auli’i Cravalho, the original voice of Moana, serves as an executive producer for this project.
Directed by Thomas Kail, this live-action remake is co-written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who also penned the original film. This marks Kail's directorial debut. The cast includes John Tui as Chief Tui, Moana’s father, Frankie Adams as her mother Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
However, reactions on social media have been mixed, with some fans expressing disappointment over Johnson's appearance. Critics have suggested that the live-action adaptation may not have been necessary, with many feeling that certain elements are better suited for animation. Maui's wig, in particular, has drawn significant criticism from viewers.
Details on the Live-Action Moana
This live-action version features music by Mark Mancina, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Opetaia Foa’i, with Mancina returning to score the film. Miranda, who missed the second animated film due to other commitments, is back for this adaptation. The live-action film closely mirrors the original, although some viewers have noted that the visual effects may not meet expectations. Moana is set to hit theaters on July 10.
The animated version released in 2016 grossed $643 million globally and received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. Miranda was also nominated for his original song How Far I’ll Go. In 2025, Disney's live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch achieved over a billion dollars in global earnings, with a sequel already in development.
