Introduction to Ramayana's Characters

The Pratham Sankalp event for Ramayana took place in Delhi, showcasing the film's characters through a unique comic book format. Attendees on July 18 received this comic to gain insights into the film's vision. The comic book confirmed the actors portraying key roles in Nitesh Tiwari's ambitious project. While the characters of Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi, and Ravi Dubey were previously announced, the complete cast list has now been unveiled. From Anupam Kher as Jatayu to Faisal Malik as Kumbhakarna, let's explore the full cast of Ramayana and their character descriptions.

Character Breakdown

Ranbir Kapoor as Rama

According to the comic, Rama is depicted as the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, embodying the ideal man, or Maryada Purushottam.

Sai Pallavi as Sita

Sita is portrayed as Bhoomi Devi, believed to be born not among humans but as the Goddess of Earth. The comic describes her as fearless and loyal, choosing to accompany Rama into exile despite having the option to stay behind. Her quick thinking during her abduction by Ravana was crucial in helping Rama find her.

Yash as Ravana

Ravana is characterized as having received a boon from Lord Brahma, granting him invincibility against all beings except humans. His anger stemmed from witnessing the diminishing dignity of the rakshasas under his half-brother, Kubera. After performing severe penance for ten thousand years, he was granted boons, but he overlooked humans and monkeys, considering them too insignificant to fear.

Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari

Kajal Aggarwal will portray Mandodari, Ravana's wife, although her role will be limited in the first part of the franchise.

Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha

Shurpanakha serves as the catalyst for the Ramayana. After Lakshmana cuts off her ear and nose, the revenge saga begins. Rakul Preet Singh will portray Ravana's sister.

Shobana as Kekasi

Shobana has been cast as Kekasi, Ravana's mother, who is the daughter of the Asura king Sumali and married to sage Vishrava. They had four children: Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Vibhishana, and Shurpanakha.

Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana

Ravi Dubey takes on the role of Lakshmana, known for his expertise in celestial weaponry. Rama trusted him implicitly, and he was fiercely loyal. The comic notes that Lakshmana remained awake throughout their 14 years of exile, having wished for a boon to always protect Rama and Sita. His protective nature led him to confront Shurpanakha, igniting the epic battle.

Addinath Kothare as Bharata

Addinath Kothare portrays Bharata, Rama's younger brother, who, despite being a prince, never sought power for himself.

Nitish Sharma as Shatrughna

Nitish Sharma plays Shatrughna, the youngest prince of Ayodhya, whose strong sense of justice almost led him to harm the scheming maid Manthara, only stopping due to Bharata's reminder of Rama's values.

Kunal Kapoor as Indra

Kunal Kapoor takes on the role of Indra, who defeated the Rakshas rule and closely observes Rama's journey, recognizing him as Lord Vishnu's incarnation destined to restore cosmic order.

Indira Krishna as Kaushalya

Kaushalya, Dashratha’s first wife, is deeply attached to her son Rama. When he is exiled, she wishes to accompany him but ultimately stays behind out of duty.

Sonal Jha as Sumitra

Sonal Jha plays Sumitra, the second queen of Ayodhya and mother to Lakshmana and Shatrughna. She is the emotional backbone of the royal family during turbulent times.

Arun Govil as Dashratha

Dashratha, despite having a prosperous kingdom and three loving wives, yearns for a son. His prayers are answered with the birth of four princes, but he is forced to send Rama into exile due to a promise made to Kaikeyi.

Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi

Kaikeyi, Dashratha’s youngest queen, uses her boons to demand Rama’s exile, influenced by her maid Manthara.

Sheeba Chadha as Manthara

Manthara, Kaikeyi’s maid and Bharata’s governess, manipulates Kaikeyi into believing that Bharata's position is threatened, filling her with doubt.

Faisal Malik as Kumbhakarna

Faisal Malik, known for his role in a popular web series, will portray Kumbhakarna, one of Ravana’s brothers.

Mukesh Tiwari as Agastya

Mukesh Tiwari will play Rishi Agastya, who provides Rama with wisdom and divine support throughout his journey.

Vivek Oberoi as Vidyutjihva

Vivek Oberoi joins the cast as Vidyutjihva, who is married to Rakul Preet Singh's character.

Anupam Kher as Jatayu

Initially rumored to be voiced by Amitabh Bachchan, the comic confirms Anupam Kher as the voice of Jatayu.

Additionally, Shishir Sharma will portray Vashishtha, the royal priest, while Ajinkya Deo will take on the role of Vishwamitra, the sage guiding Rama and Lakshmana. Harish Uthaman will play Vibhishana, Ravana’s younger brother. The Ramayana, a two-part film series, is set to release during Diwali 2026, with the second part following in 2027. The trailer is scheduled to debut on July 24 at the San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
