Excitement Builds for Tom Holland's Spider-Man: Brand New Day Amid Pre-Sales Controversy
Anticipation Surrounds Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Tom Holland's upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is already making waves before its theatrical release. The Marvel production has set a remarkable record for first-day advance ticket sales in South Korea, surpassing expectations for comic book films this decade. However, just days after the pre-sales began, they were unexpectedly halted, leaving fans and industry insiders buzzing with speculation as the release date approaches.
Reasons Behind the Halt of Pre-Sales in South Korea
According to reports from Naver, the advance ticket sales for Spider-Man: Brand New Day were suspended only three days after they launched. The bookings, which opened on July 8 ahead of the film's July 29 release, faced backlash from segments of the local film community, who claimed that the early sales disrupted the market dynamics. The Korean Film Council confirmed that the advance bookings were officially withdrawn on July 10.
Initially, when pre-sales commenced on July 8, distributor Sony Pictures expressed excitement over the enthusiastic audience response, stating, "We immediately began full-scale advance ticket sales thanks to the enthusiastic support of the audience." They also highlighted the distribution of government-supported discount coupons for movie tickets, which were available on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:00 AM (KST) on the same day. By July 10, approximately 103,000 advance tickets had already been sold.
Despite the strong demand, the decision to halt sales drew criticism from members of the Korean film industry. They questioned the timing of the advance ticket sales, which began before the film's age rating review was completed. Industry representatives pointed out that typically, advance sales start about two weeks prior to a film's release, while some independent films only open bookings a few days before their debut. Critics argued that allowing Hollywood distributors to operate under different rules creates an uneven competitive landscape.
Commenting on the situation, a representative from the Korean Film Producers Association remarked, "The market disruption caused by direct distributors is detrimental to the struggling Korean film industry," emphasizing the need for amendments to the Film Promotion Act to prevent legal loopholes.
