Emilia Clarke Reflects on Overcoming Health Challenges and Brain Hemorrhages
Emilia Clarke's Journey Through Health Struggles
Emilia Clarke, renowned for her role in Game of Thrones, faced significant health challenges in her twenties, enduring two brain hemorrhages. During a recent event, she delivered a heartfelt address about her journey of recovery following these health crises. Emilia disclosed that her first brain hemorrhage occurred when she was just 22, coinciding with the filming of the inaugural season of GoT. Two years later, at the age of 24, she experienced another hemorrhage while making her Broadway debut. She candidly shared her feelings of 'shame' regarding her diagnosis.
Emilia Clarke Discusses Her Health Challenges
At the Variety Power of Women event, Emilia expressed, "In 2011, I was reluctant to disclose my brain bleeds. I felt ashamed and overwhelmed by a diagnosis I couldn't comprehend." She revealed that HBO was not informed about her condition until she was certain she would survive, a common practice in the industry when character deaths are scripted.
After her second hemorrhage, Emilia began to consider the benefits of discussing her experiences publicly, although it took her several years to come to terms with the reality of her situation. Reflecting on the fifteen years since her first brain injury, she acknowledged the challenges she faced during that period. Despite her struggles, she was back in front of the camera within weeks of her traumas, without fully processing the impact of her injuries. Emilia recalled the overwhelming support she received when she opened up about her diagnosis in 2019. She also shared insights into her recovery journey, stating, "With the support of the remarkable David Putrino at Mount Sinai in New York, I have regained the energy and positivity I had in my twenties. This has been a journey, not a miraculous fix." She concluded by emphasizing that one in three individuals will experience a brain injury, and they deserve a path to recovery.
