Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights: A Surprising Box Office Success Amid Streaming Trends
Wuthering Heights Defies Expectations
Emerald Fennell's cinematic interpretation of Emily Brontë's timeless novel, Wuthering Heights, has made a significant impact in the film industry, challenging the current streaming landscape. Despite receiving a lukewarm 58% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has struck a chord with viewers, raking in an impressive $32.8 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. Featuring performances by Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, this romantic drama has accumulated a total of $84 million in North America, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2026, as reported by Box Office Mojo.
Wuthering Heights premiered in U.S. theaters on February 13 and wrapped up its North American run on April 9, earning an additional $8,000 from 58 locations on its last day. Although its domestic theatrical journey has concluded, the film is still being shown in select international markets. As it nears the end of its global release, Wuthering Heights is likely to fall short of several key box office milestones.
In addition to its domestic success, the film has also earned $156.4 million internationally, bringing its total worldwide gross to $240.4 million. However, it is still about $9.6 million away from the coveted $250 million mark, a target that seems increasingly out of reach as the film's run comes to a close. With a production budget estimated at $80 million, Wuthering Heights needed to reach $200 million globally to break even, a threshold it has surpassed, resulting in a theatrical profit of $40.4 million.
Despite this profit, achieving a surplus of $50 million appears unlikely at this point. Additionally, to secure a spot in the all-time top 1000 films at the domestic box office, Wuthering Heights would have needed to surpass Peter Pan's total of $87.4 million. With its domestic run effectively over, the film will not reach this milestone, as it requires an additional $3.4 million.
The narrative delves into the complex relationship between Heathcliff, played by Jacob Elordi, and Catherine Earnshaw, portrayed by Margot Robbie. Their intense yet troubled romance is characterized by themes of jealousy, pride, and societal constraints, ultimately leading to turmoil and devastation that affects not only their lives but also those around them. As Wuthering Heights concludes its theatrical journey, it leaves a lasting impression on the cinematic landscape of 2026.
