Upcoming Documentary on Mac Mohan


The legacy of Mac Mohan, famously known for his role as Sambha in Sholay, is set to be captured in a new documentary titled Discovering Sambha. This announcement was made during the Cannes Film Festival, where it was revealed that his daughters will be involved in the project. The film, a collaboration between India and Australia, will be helmed by Manjari Makijany, while Vinati Makijany will take on the role of producer. Filming is slated to commence in 2026, with a release expected the following year. The documentary will delve into Mac Mohan's extensive career, which spanned over five decades and included notable films like Don, Satte Pe Satta, and Trishul.


Details of the Documentary


As reported by a media outlet, Discovering Sambha will feature archival footage and interviews with family and friends, focusing on themes such as identity, legacy, and the connection between cinema and personal memories. Manjari Makijany will co-produce the film alongside Emmanuel Pappas from Asia Pacific Pictures, while Vinati Makijany will oversee production through Mac Productions, the company founded by their father. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the founder of the Film Heritage Foundation, will serve as an advisor for the documentary.



Manjari, who has received an Emmy nomination for her work on films like Spin and Skater Girl, expressed that creating this documentary has been a deeply emotional journey. She mentioned that she is uncovering her father's essence through the stories of those who knew him. In her words, "As a daughter, I’m piecing together memories, absences, and emotions with my sister that shaped our lives and influenced my own filmmaking journey." Raveena Tandon, Mac Mohan’s niece, shared her fond memories of her uncle, highlighting his ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him. She believes the documentary will reveal a more personal and relatable side of the late actor, stating, "Though he played the quintessential baddie on screen, he was a golden-hearted señor and one of the warmest people you could know in real life."


About Mac Mohan


Born Mohan Makijany in Karachi on April 24, 1938, Mac Mohan moved to Mumbai (then Bombay) with aspirations of becoming a cricketer. However, he soon found his calling in theater and pursued acting classes at the Filmalaya School of Acting. He began his career in Bollywood as an assistant to director Chetan Anand and made his acting debut in the 1964 film Haqeeqat. His last appearance on screen was in Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge (2010), where he made a guest appearance.
