A Shift from Intensity to Laughter

Following the impactful film Shool, director E. Niwas made an unexpected transition into the realm of comedy with Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, a whimsical film that featured a stellar cast and delivered memorable comedic moments. In this discussion, he reminisces about the film's production, its cast, the music, and his genre shift.

What prompted your switch to comedy?
After the serious narrative of Shool, I felt the need to explore a lighter genre to refresh myself as a filmmaker, which led to the creation of the zany comedy Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega.

It had a wildly entertaining cast, didn't it?
Indeed, the film boasted a fantastic ensemble including Saif Ali Khan, Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Twinkle Khanna, and Sonali Bendre. Notably, Johny Lever's portrayal of Aslam Bhai remains iconic, with fans still quoting his lines even after 24 years. Time truly flies!

How was the music received?
The soundtrack, featuring my favorite tracks composed by Vishal Bharadwaj, was a hit. Songs like Rama Rama and the title track of Love Ke Liye Saala Kuch Bhi Karega are particularly memorable.

Was the film inspired by any Hollywood work?
Yes, it draws loose inspiration from Joel Coen’s Fargo and a South Indian film produced by my producer Ram Gopal Varma, titled Money.

What was your experience working with Saif Ali Khan?
Collaborating with Saif was fantastic; his comedic timing was truly exceptional.

Did you enjoy the transition from the serious Shool to the comedic Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega?
Absolutely! Shifting to a sitcom format was a significant change from intense drama. It required precise timing, chemistry, and a touch of exaggeration. Overall, it was a fun and light-hearted environment with the ensemble cast.
