Diljit Dosanjh: A Global Icon with Humble Beginnings

Diljit Dosanjh has become a household name, not only in India but also internationally, with a massive fan base. The Punjabi superstar, who has achieved remarkable success with sold-out concerts worldwide, began his career performing at small events like weddings and birthday parties for a mere Rs 5,000. Coming from a modest background, Diljit recently shared his experiences of financial hardship during his youth, revealing that his family struggled due to their 'below-average' economic situation. Despite these challenges, he was determined to pursue his passion for music, performing tirelessly until he became a global sensation.

Diljit Dosanjh Discusses His Financial Challenges

In a recent podcast, Diljit opened up about how growing up in a financially constrained environment fueled his drive to succeed. He stated, 'I came from a poor family. It was like a below-average family. If you got sick, you wouldn't have money to go to the doctor, so don't get sick because you don't have money.' After the release of his debut album, Ishq Da Uda Ada, in the early 2000s, he received numerous offers to perform at birthday parties, which he accepted without hesitation, believing it was essential for his career growth.

Dosanjh noted that live performances quickly became his primary source of income, describing the field as financially rewarding. However, he eventually ceased performing at weddings due to disapproval from some senior Punjabi artists regarding the volume of shows he was undertaking. Inspired by his idol, Michael Jackson, Diljit aspired to showcase Punjabi music on a global stage, focusing on concerts despite skepticism from others. His dedication has since paid off.

Current Projects

Recently, Diljit starred in director Imtiaz Ali's film Main Vaapas Aaunga, alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari, and Vedang Raina. This Partition drama marked his second collaboration with the renowned filmmaker, following the Netflix project Amar Singh Chamkila. Although the film had a slow start, it gained traction after its second weekend, thanks to positive audience feedback and word-of-mouth, leading to a significant increase in box office collections. Currently, Diljit is preparing for his upcoming Aura World Tour, set to kick off next month.
