Diljit Dosanjh's Journey and Recent Concert
Diljit Dosanjh has made significant strides in his career, evolving from a local Punjabi star to an internationally recognized artist. His journey has been marked by years of dedication and hard work. Performing in front of a packed audience is a dream for every artist, and during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Diljit shared his experience of entertaining over 50,000 fans at his recent concert in Vancouver as part of his ongoing Aura tour. He connected this moment to the historical Komagata Maru incident, expressing the emotional weight it carried for him. This reunion with Fallon marked two years since his last appearance on the show.
Understanding the Komagata Maru Incident
What is the Komagata Maru Incident?
During the show, Diljit recounted the Komagata Maru incident, which occurred in 1914 when Punjabi immigrants were denied entry into Canada. He highlighted that the same Vancouver stadium, just two kilometers from where the original incident took place, was filled with Punjabis celebrating their culture.
The Komagata Maru incident involved a Japanese steamship carrying 376 passengers, primarily Sikhs, who were denied entry despite being British subjects. Only 24 individuals were permitted to disembark, and the ship was forced to return to India under naval escort. Upon arrival in Budge Budge, near Kolkata, the Indian Imperial Police attempted to arrest the leaders of the group, resulting in violence and the tragic deaths of 20 passengers.

Decades later, the incident received formal recognition. In 2016, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued an apology, followed by a similar acknowledgment from the Vancouver City Council in 2021.
