Kara Experiences Box Office Slowdown

Dhanush's film Kara is witnessing a significant drop in box office performance following the release of Suriya's new movie, Karuppu, on May 15. On its 16th day, Kara garnered a net collection of Rs 16 lakh in India, bringing its total domestic earnings to Rs 36.96 crore. Initially, the heist thriller had shown better performance before the arrival of Karuppu, but it has since started to decline. In contrast, Karuppu, featuring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, has debuted to a robust response, achieving impressive figures on its opening day both in India and internationally.

Kara's Decline Post-Karuppu Release

Currently, Kara is facing a noticeable downturn at the box office as the new Tamil film Karuppu draws audiences away. On its sixteenth day, the film managed to secure Rs 16 lakh net in India, translating to approximately Rs 18 lakh gross. It was showcased in 339 screenings, with an overall occupancy rate of 20.0 percent, indicating a clear reduction in box office revenue. Kara's performance is heavily reliant on Tamil Nadu, which remains its strongest market, contributing Rs 29.57 crore to its gross collections. The film's total earnings now stand at Rs 41.58 crore.

Featuring a cast of National Award-winning actors and a Padma Shri recipient, including Jayaram and MS Bhaskar, expectations were high for Kara to maintain Dhanush's successful trajectory post-pandemic. Directed by Vignesh Raja, this heist thriller is set in the early 1990s and marks Dhanush's 54th film, co-written by Alfred Prakash.

Karuppu's Impressive Opening Performance

While Kara is losing momentum, Karuppu has made a strong entrance into theaters, quickly capturing box office attention. The film, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, achieved a net collection of Rs 14.40 crore in India on its first day from 4,891 screenings, with a gross of Rs 16.66 crore. The Tamil version alone accounted for Rs 12 crore net.

Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu recorded an impressive overall occupancy of 54.0 percent across 3,448 shows on its opening day, indicating strong audience interest right from the start. Additionally, the film performed well internationally, grossing Rs 4 crore on its first day abroad, which pushed its total worldwide gross to Rs 20.66 crore, marking a powerful global debut. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the film also features Indrans and Natty Subramaniam.
