Dewald Brevis Achieves Historic Milestone

Dewald Brevis, a talented batter from South Africa, has quickly gained recognition as one of the brightest young prospects in cricket. On Tuesday, during a match in Darwin, he etched his name in the record books by becoming the youngest South African to score a century in T20 internationals, achieving this feat with an impressive 125 runs off just 56 balls against Australia in the second T20I.

Born on April 29, 2003, Brevis began his cricket journey at a tender age and first captured attention during the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup, where he led the run charts. His outstanding performance earned him a contract with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He is affectionately nicknamed 'Baby AB' due to his batting style, reminiscent of the legendary AB de Villiers.

His reputation soared in October 2022 when he scored a staggering 162 runs off 57 balls in a domestic T20 match for the Titans, marking the highest T20 score in South Africa's history. Brevis has also made his mark in various global T20 leagues, including the Caribbean Premier League, T20 Blast, and Major League Cricket.

Although he had a modest start in T20Is against Australia, scoring only five runs in his first two matches, Brevis rebounded impressively in the 2023-24 One-Day Cup, finishing as the third-highest run-scorer. He played a crucial role for MI Cape Town in the SA20, helping them secure their first title with a total of 573 runs at an average of 47.75, including two centuries.

In the recent T20I against Australia, Brevis showcased his explosive batting skills, remaining unbeaten at 125 and frustrating the Australian bowlers. This remarkable innings not only made him the youngest South African to achieve a T20I century, surpassing Richard Levi's previous record, but it was also the second-fastest century by a South African, reached in just 41 balls.

In the Indian Premier League, Brevis has been signed as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.
