Cult Classics of Bollywood: Films That Gained Fame After Release

Certain films are ahead of their time, meaning they may not receive appreciation upon their initial release. However, once they are aired on television or other platforms, they often transform into classics or cult favorites. The number of such films is not limited to just a few; there are many.

Let's explore three films that have earned the title of cult classics in Bollywood.

Jaaney Bhi Do Yaaro

Released in 1983, the film 'Jaaney Bhi Do Yaaro' continues to resonate with audiences today. Featuring actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Satish Kaushik, and Satish Shah in pivotal roles, the film is notable for its exceptional performances. At the time, these actors were relatively unknown, and no one anticipated that this film, made on a budget of just 6.84 lakhs, would achieve such acclaim. Interestingly, it was funded not by producers but by a government agency.

The cast received minimal compensation, with Naseeruddin Shah earning the highest fee of 15,000 rupees, while the others received between 3,000 to 5,000 rupees. This film boldly critiques government corruption.

Swades

Another Bollywood film that captured the hearts of viewers is 'Swades.' Although it did not perform well at the box office, its story left a lasting impact. This film, released in 2004, won over a dozen awards. Starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role alongside Gayatri Joshi, Rajesh Vivek, Dayashankar Pandey, and Farukh Jafar, 'Swades' was directed and written by Ashutosh Gowariker.

Despite its box office failure, earning 16.31 crores in India and a total of 33.98 crores worldwide, 'Swades' later gained cult status.

Lakshya

The Bollywood film 'Lakshya,' released in 2004, is regarded as a cult classic. Directed by Farhan Akhtar and written by Javed Akhtar, with production by Ritesh Sidhwani, the film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Preity Zinta. It tells the story of a young man who joins the Indian Army and eventually becomes a war hero. Although it did not succeed at the box office, it later achieved cult classic status.
