Challenges Ahead for 'Lawrence of Punjab'

'Lawrence of Punjab' is encountering significant hurdles regarding its upcoming release. This documentary series, labeled as "controversial," was scheduled to debut on ZEE5 on April 27, 2026. However, the Punjab police have formally requested the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) to prohibit the airing of the series. The show is a crime-drama inspired by the life of the incarcerated gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, known for orchestrating notorious attacks and threats against Bollywood celebrities such as Salman Khan and Ranveer Singh. The latest incident linked to him involved gunfire outside Rohit Shetty's residence in Mumbai.

The narrative of 'Lawrence of Punjab' delves into the transformation of a college student from Punjab into one of India's most notorious crime figures, entangled in extortion schemes, gang conflicts, and high-profile criminal cases. The creators describe the docu-series as a gritty portrayal of real-world crime, akin to acclaimed shows like Scam 1992 and Delhi Crime, but focused on the underworld.

Controversy Surrounding 'Lawrence of Punjab'

In anticipation of its release, the Punjab police formally requested the MIB on April 23 to prevent public access to the series on ZEE5. In a letter addressed to the Special Director General of Police (Cyber Crime), V. Neeraja, the police expressed concerns regarding the documentary's content. They argued that the series chronicles the life and criminal activities of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, thereby "glorifying and trivializing organized crime."

Concerns Over Crime Glorification

The police further asserted that the series contains dramatized depictions and real-life references to significant crimes, including the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. They warned that such portrayals could influence younger viewers by normalizing or romanticizing criminal behavior. The police believe that the content could jeopardize law enforcement efforts and disrupt public order within the state.

Political Response to the Series

The Punjab police have specifically urged ZEE5 to halt streaming and to remove access to the trailer globally. Additionally, Punjab Congress President and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a ban on the series. His letter states, "I request you to kindly issue directions to the ministries of Information and Broadcasting and Information Technology to prohibit the release of the web series." Directed by Raghav Dar, 'Lawrence of Punjab' features real interviews, archival footage, and reconstructions instead of a conventional scripted cast.
