Controversy Surrounds K-Drama 'Perfect Crown' Ahead of Finale
Major Backlash for 'Perfect Crown'
The popular K-drama Perfect Crown is currently embroiled in controversy just as it approaches its much-anticipated finale. The series, featuring IU and Byeon Woo-Seok, faced criticism from viewers who accused it of inaccurately portraying Korean history and symbolism during a pivotal coronation scene. In response to the backlash, the production team issued an apology, acknowledging their shortcomings in historical accuracy and worldbuilding. They committed to revising the controversial scenes by updating the audio and subtitles for future broadcasts, VOD releases, and OTT streaming versions.
Apology from the Production Team
Perfect Crown makers apologise
In light of the criticism regarding their research efforts, the production team released a detailed apology on the drama’s official website. They expressed, “We sincerely bow our heads in apology to the many viewers who watched and supported the drama with affection, for causing concern over issues related to the worldbuilding and historical inaccuracies.”
The creators admitted they did not thoroughly investigate the evolution of Joseon court etiquette over time. While they acknowledged that Perfect Crown is primarily a romance, they recognized that the historical aspects required more careful attention and research. They specifically addressed concerns regarding the use of the imperial crown and the title “Your Majesty the Emperor,” admitting these choices undermined the “historical dignity and sovereignty” of Korea. To alleviate viewer concerns, the team confirmed that they would amend the controversial scenes, with updates to the audio and subtitles in future rebroadcasts, VOD releases, and OTT streaming versions. They concluded by promising to take greater responsibility in their future projects to better reflect the trust viewers place in them.
Understanding the Guryumyeongwan Controversy
What is Perfect Crown's Guryumyeongwan controversy?
The controversy began after Episode 11 of Perfect Crown aired on May 15. The drama imagines an alternate history where Korea is a constitutional monarchy that was never colonized by Japan, but it faced backlash for depicting Korea as historically subordinate to China.
The main issue arose during Prince Ian’s coronation scene, where he wore a traditional royal crown known as the 'Guryumyeongwan,' characterized by nine strings of beads. Historically, this crown was associated with Joseon rulers during times when Korea had a tributary relationship with China. In contrast, independent emperors wore the “Sipyiryumyeongwan,” which featured twelve bead strings as a symbol of sovereignty. Many viewers argued that by using the nine-string crown, the show inadvertently suggested that Korea remained under Chinese influence. The criticism intensified due to the ceremonial dialogue during Prince Ian’s ascension, where parliament members exclaimed 'Cheon-se,' meaning 'may the kingdom prosper for a thousand years.' This phrase was traditionally used for Joseon kings, while emperors were honored with 'Man-se,' meaning 'ten thousand years.'
