Anik Dutta's Untimely Demise
Renowned Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta has sadly passed away following a serious fall at his home in Hindustan Park, Kolkata, on May 27. The National Award-winning director, known for his impactful films like Bhooter Bhabishyat, Borunbabur Bondhu, Aparajito, and Joto Kando Kolkatatei, was rushed to a hospital in Dhakuria but succumbed to his injuries. Reports suggest that he had been battling respiratory issues for some time.
Details Surrounding His Fall
Sources indicate that Dutta had been living alone in Kolkata for several months, while his daughter resides in Mumbai. He was the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, the founder of United Bank of India. Following the fall, he was admitted to the hospital, where his condition deteriorated.
His film Bhooter Bhabishyat, released in 2012, marked his entry into Bengali cinema and featured a talented cast including Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and Parambrata Chatterjee. The film was well-received for its blend of political satire and horror-comedy, establishing Dutta as a significant voice in the industry.
Dutta continued to explore similar themes in his subsequent works, such as Ashchorjyo Prodeep. His contributions earned him several accolades, including Filmfare Awards East for Best Dialogue and Best Director for Borunbabur Bondhu, which starred the legendary Soumitra Chatterjee.
His Legacy in Film
Another notable film, Aparajito, featuring Jeetu Kamal, drew inspiration from the making of Pather Panchali and resonated deeply with audiences, achieving both critical acclaim and commercial success. At the time of his passing, Dutta was reportedly working on Aparajito 2.
His last directorial venture, Joto Kando Kolkatatei, starring Abir Chatterjee, premiered in September of the previous year. During its release, Dutta expressed concerns that it might be his final project. He is survived by his estranged partner Sandhi and his daughter, leaving a profound void in the Bengali cinema landscape.
