Renowned actor, director, and writer Bhagyaraj passed away at the age of 73 in Chennai following a severe heart attack. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. His body was taken to his home, where family, friends, and fans gathered to pay their final respects to the legendary filmmaker. After the necessary rituals, Bhagyaraj's last journey commenced this morning, with his family bidding him an emotional goodbye. He was honored with a 72-gun salute, and a moment of silence was observed prior to the funeral in Chennai.

Reports indicate that Bhagyaraj's funeral is set to take place at the Besant Nagar Electric Crematorium in Chennai. The procession to the crematorium began from his residence, where family members performed the final rites. His son, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, was visibly emotional as his father received the 72-gun salute. Bhagyaraj's daughter remained close to his body in the hearse, while his wife, Poornima, shared a final kiss with him.

The hearse carrying Bhagyaraj's remains was surrounded by a large crowd of fans on the streets of Chennai. The funeral is scheduled for 1:30 PM today.

Bhagyaraj made significant contributions to Tamil cinema, not only as a director and writer but also as an actor. He is celebrated as one of the finest screenplay writers, having started his career as an assistant to the esteemed director Bharathiraja in the 1970s. His directorial debut was with Suvarillatha Chiththirangal in 1979, and he quickly rose to become one of Tamil cinema's most prominent figures. A versatile talent, he starred in many of his own productions.

Some of his notable films include Andha 7 Naatkal, Darling, Darling, Darling, Mundhanai Mudichu, Dhavani Kanavugal, Chinna Veedu, Avasara Police 100, and Parijatham. His first foray into Hindi cinema was with Woh 7 Din, for which he wrote the story and screenplay. This film featured Anil Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure, and Naseeruddin Shah and was a remake of Andha 7 Naatkal. Additionally, Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi starred in Masterji, an adaptation of his Tamil hit Mundhanai Mudichu.

Bhagyaraj also directed the Hindi revenge drama Aakhree Raasta, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi, and Jaya Prada, which remains one of his most recognized works in Bollywood. He later remade his Tamil film Veetla Visheshanga as Mr Bechara in Hindi, starring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, and Nagarjuna. His filmography also includes Papa the Great (2000) with Krishna Kumar, Nagma, and child actor Master Bobby, as well as the remake of Rasukutty in Raja Babu (1994) featuring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor.

Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, Poornima, and their two children, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Saranya Bhagyaraj.
