Ranveer Singh Surpasses All with Record Earnings in Indian Cinema!
A New Era of Actor Salaries in Indian Cinema
In a significant transformation within the Indian film sector, the compensation for actors has changed remarkably over the years. What was once considered extraordinary—a ₹10 crore salary—has now become the norm. During the 1990s, legendary figures like Chiranjeevi, Kamal Haasan, and Sridevi set new benchmarks by charging ₹1 crore per film. As time went on, the Bollywood Khans rose to prominence, demanding ever-higher fees. However, the last decade has seen regional stars reclaiming the limelight, with actors such as Rajinikanth, Yash, and Allu Arjun now frequently earning more than ₹200 crore per film.
As we look ahead to 2026, a new frontrunner has emerged in the race for India’s highest-paid actor: Ranveer Singh. His recent triumph comes from the blockbuster series, Dhurandhar, which was initially shot as a single project. The two films have collectively amassed an incredible ₹3200 crore globally, with over ₹1900 crore netted in India alone. In a savvy decision, Ranveer chose a profit-sharing arrangement instead of his usual fee, which has significantly enhanced his earnings. He even put in his own funds when production costs exceeded the budget, further increasing his profit share.
Industry estimates indicate that after factoring in various revenue streams, including distribution shares and non-theatrical rights, Ranveer's earnings from Dhurandhar are around ₹325 crore. This amount not only eclipses his co-stars but also sets a new record for the highest payout for an Indian actor from a single film. While Jio Studios and Aditya Dhar's B62 Studios have claimed the majority of the profits, Ranveer's share is a remarkable milestone in the industry.
Prior to Ranveer's record-breaking earnings, Rajinikanth held the title of the highest-paid Indian actor, earning over ₹250 crore for his 2024 hit, Jailer. Other notable figures in the industry, including Allu Arjun and Prabhas, also reported earnings exceeding ₹200 crore from their recent projects, Pushpa 2 and Kalki 2898 AD, respectively. In Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan had maintained the record since 2023, earning around ₹200 crore each for his major successes, Pathaan and Jawan.
This evolution in earnings not only highlights the shifting dynamics of the film industry but also the growing openness of actors to explore innovative compensation structures. As the market continues to grow, it will be fascinating to observe how this trend shapes future projects and the financial landscape for actors throughout India.
