Michael Jackson's Biopic Shatters Records at Indian Box Office: A Look at Its Impact
Michael Jackson's Biopic Makes Waves in India
Antoine Fuqua's latest film, "Michael," which depicts the life of the iconic Michael Jackson, has made a remarkable impression at the Indian box office, showcasing the global star's lasting appeal. Within just two days, the film's revenue has already exceeded the total earnings of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in India, setting it up for a record-breaking debut among music biopics in the nation. Jackson's impact on both music and cinema, especially in India, is significant, with his performances revolutionizing choreography in films.
One of the most memorable moments in Jackson's career was his visit to Mumbai in 1996, where he attracted around 35,000 fans to a sold-out concert. He also performed in Bengaluru and Delhi NCR during this tour, further cementing his legacy in the Indian entertainment scene. "Michael" debuted in India on a Friday, raking in 4.5 crore on its first day. The following day, Saturday, saw an increase in box office earnings to approximately 6.50 crore, bringing the two-day total to around 12.70 crore, reflecting a notable 45% growth from the opening day.
Although pre-sales were not exceptionally high, the film saw a strong turnout on Saturday, indicating the potential for breaking new records for Hollywood films in India. Reports suggest that the Jaafar Jackson-led biopic has already surpassed "Bohemian Rhapsody," which earned 7 crore throughout its entire run in India, with "Michael" achieving nearly double that in just two days.
Industry experts estimate that "Michael" could generate around 20 crore over its opening weekend in India, surpassing the total earnings of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," which, despite being a concert film rather than a biopic, earned 13 crore. This performance highlights the King of Pop's enduring popularity, particularly in South India, where Tamil Nadu and Kerala have reported the highest earnings, followed by Karnataka and Mumbai.
In North America, projections for "Michael" suggest earnings between $95 million and $100 million, with expectations of surpassing $200 million globally during its opening weekend. Released on April 24, the film is set to establish a new standard for biopics, reflecting Michael Jackson's lasting legacy.
