A Cinematic Tribute to a Maratha Legend
Riteish Deshmukh is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated film, Raja Shivaji, which will soon hit theaters. This cinematic portrayal will vividly depict the life of the Maratha emperor, showcasing his journey from youth to his reign over the Maratha empire. The film aims to honor his legacy and valor, presenting a historically accurate narrative with great care and detail. Alongside Shivaji Maharaj, the film also pays homage to his family, particularly his first wife, Saibai Bhonsale, portrayed by Genelia Deshmukh in Raja Shivaji.
The Life of Saibai Bhonsale
Who was Saibai Bhonsale?
Saibai was a pivotal figure in Shivaji's life, known for her loyalty and support. Born into the Nimbalkar dynasty, she was the daughter of Mudhojirao Naik Nimbalkar and Reubai, and her family governed the Phaltan region. As the 16th ruler of Phaltan and sister to Bajaj Rao, she came from a noble background, possessing both beauty and warrior-like qualities.
A Royal Union
Shivaji and Saibai's Wedding
Shivaji and Saibai's wedding was a modest affair, as his father, Shahaji Raje Bhonsale, was away with his second wife in Bangalore, and his brothers could not attend either. Later, a grand celebration was organized to honor the couple. Together, they had three children: a son, Sambhaji, and two daughters, Ambikabai and Ranubai. As the queen of the Maratha empire, Saibai played a crucial role in governance during Shivaji's absences, particularly when he was under siege by the Mughals at Panhala, with Jijabai guiding her.
Tragic Loss
Saibai's Passing
Saibai's life was tragically cut short at the age of 26. Reports suggest that she passed away shortly after giving birth to Sambhaji, who was only about two and a half years old when he lost his mother. Her death occurred in 1659 CE at Rajgad Fort, reportedly due to health complications following childbirth. After her demise, Shivaji married Soyrabai, but she could never fill the void left by Saibai. It is said that Shivaji's last words were 'Sai', a testament to his enduring love for her.
