Exciting news has emerged for Aamir Khan enthusiasts as the beloved film "Three Idiots" is making a comeback to theaters nearly 17 years after its debut. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, this iconic comedy-drama is slated to return on September 4, 2026, allowing fans to relive the magic on the big screen. This re-release is part of NH Studios' initiative following their acquisition of the Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films catalog, aiming to reintroduce one of Indian cinema's most celebrated blockbusters to a new generation, especially those who missed its original theatrical run.
Interestingly, "Three Idiots" was not included in the lineup of Aamir Khan's films that were re-released during his 60th birthday celebrations last year. Now, fans will finally get the chance to enjoy the film in theaters once more. Released in 2009, it marked a significant moment in modern Hindi cinema, featuring Aamir Khan as Rancho alongside R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani. The narrative follows three engineering students as they navigate friendship, academic pressures, and the pursuit of their dreams, resonating with audiences across various generations.
The film has recently gained attention due to its alleged ties to education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike concerning the Anti-TUG paper leak issue. Many fans have long believed that Aamir Khan's character, Rancho, was inspired by Wangchuk's real-life contributions in Ladakh. This debate reignited after actor Omi Vaidya, who portrayed Chatur, shared a video supporting Wangchuk and claimed that Rancho was indeed based on him. However, Aamir Khan clarified during a Q&A session at the British Film Institute that he was not aware of Wangchuk during the film's production, and neither was director Rajkumar Hirani or writer Abhijat Joshi.
Aamir also expressed his concern for Wangchuk's health amid the hunger strike, stating, "All of us are very concerned for his health and his life. We hope it ends well." As the release of "Three Idiots" approaches this September, fans will once again have the chance to experience a film that continues to entertain, inspire, and ignite discussions nearly two decades after its initial release.
