Box Office Success of 'The Odyssey'

New Delhi: The latest film by director Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey, has achieved remarkable success, grossing over ₹150 crore in India.

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film features a stellar cast including Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Lupita Nyong'o as both Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Charlize Theron as Calypso. It made its global debut on July 17.

During its opening weekend, the film garnered more than ₹70 crore in India, marking another milestone for Nolan, as it became his second film to cross ₹100 crore at the box office, following Oppenheimer.

As per estimates from the trade analysis platform Sacnilk, the film's total earnings have reached ₹165.85 crore.

The Odyssey narrates the epic tale of Greek King Odysseus (played by Damon) as he embarks on a treacherous ten-year voyage back home after the Trojan War. He faces numerous challenges, including wrathful gods, mythical sea creatures, and seductive enchantresses, all while striving to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Hathaway), and son, Telemachus (Holland).

Produced by Syncopy Inc and distributed by Universal Pictures, the film also features Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Travis Scott in supporting roles as Menelaus, Eumaeus, and a bard, respectively.

This adaptation is based on Homer's timeless Greek epic, which has seen various interpretations over the years. Notably, the 1954 film Ulysses, starring Kirk Douglas, and the 2000 Coen Brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which took a more comedic approach.

In 1997, a miniseries adaptation of The Odyssey was directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, featuring Armand Assante as Odysseus and Greta Scacchi as Penelope, chronicling the hero's arduous journey home.
