Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey Shatters Box Office Records as Highest-Grossing R-Rated Film

A New Milestone for The Odyssey

Los Angeles: Christopher Nolan's latest cinematic achievement, The Odyssey, has made history by becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film ever, amassing an impressive USD 1.352 billion globally.

This adaptation of the iconic Greek epic has outperformed 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, which previously held the record with USD 1.338 billion, as reported by a leading media outlet.

Released on July 17, Nolan's mythological saga, notable for being filmed entirely with IMAX technology, has maintained its box office supremacy despite competition from another summer hit, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The film has earned USD 516 million in the domestic market and USD 835 million internationally, marking a significant achievement for an R-rated drama set in ancient times. The Odyssey is only the third R-rated film, following Deadpool & Wolverine and Joker, to surpass the USD 1 billion mark.

Additionally, The Odyssey stands as Nolan's most successful film to date, eclipsing the earnings of his 2012 superhero film, The Dark Knight Rises, which grossed USD 1.08 billion.

The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the weary king of Ithaca, who embarks on a treacherous journey home after the Trojan War. Meanwhile, his wife Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) fend off numerous suitors vying for the throne.

The impressive cast also features Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.
