Nolan's Long-Awaited Premiere in India

Mumbai: Renowned director Christopher Nolan expressed his desire to premiere one of his films in India, particularly Tenet, which featured scenes shot in Mumbai. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans.

Now, Nolan has fulfilled that aspiration with the Indian premiere of his latest film, The Odyssey, inspired by Homer's classic poem.

Accompanied by lead actors Matt Damon and Tom Holland, Nolan, famous for his works like The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer, is currently in Mumbai.

He remarked that Indian audiences have a unique bond with cinema, making it a fitting location for the premiere.

Nolan stated, "We initially planned to come with Tenet since we filmed here in Mumbai, but the pandemic prevented that. Now, we are finally able to do this, and it’s exhilarating. We wanted to make this happen for a year."

Having visited India multiple times, he shot segments of The Dark Knight Rises (2012) in Jodhpur and Tenet (2020) in Mumbai.

He reminisced about a previous trip when filmmaker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur invited him to a conference discussing the future of cinema.

Nolan shared, "I met numerous filmmakers and gained insight into the film culture here. I’ve never encountered a place that appreciates the potential of movies as much as India does."

He added, "It seemed absurd not to premiere our films here for such an enthusiastic audience. I’m genuinely excited to be here... Mumbai feels special."

The 55-year-old director emphasized that cinema is a universal language that transcends cultural boundaries.

He noted, "I believe films serve as a universal language. One of the joys of creating large-scale films is the opportunity to connect with diverse cultures worldwide."

Nolan expressed that when films resonate with universal and timeless themes, as he hopes The Odyssey does, they unite people.

He described his visit to India as the ultimate demonstration of cinema's ability to bring people together, stating that witnessing audiences share laughter and tears is one of the most fulfilling aspects of filmmaking.

He remarked, "It’s thrilling to arrive in a new place and discover common ground, to share entertainment, laughter, and tears through a film. This is the ultimate expression of that for us."

Nolan humorously referenced Holland, who stars in both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is set to release later this month.

He joked, "If you see only one Tom Holland film this summer..." eliciting laughter from the audience.

While The Odyssey is set to hit Indian theaters on July 16, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will follow two weeks later on July 30.

In The Odyssey, Nolan adapts the ancient Greek epic, chronicling Odysseus's decade-long journey home after the Trojan War, where he faces divine wrath, mythical creatures like Cyclops and Sirens, and numerous trials testing his bravery and intellect.

When asked about the pressure of adapting such a revered literary work, Nolan quipped that he wasn't concerned about Homer coming after him.

He acknowledged, "Homer has many representatives who believe they know how to interpret him. Adapting a beloved story that has captivated generations for 3,000 years comes with diverse expectations."

Nolan reflected on his experience adapting Batman for The Dark Knight trilogy, which influenced his approach to The Odyssey.

He stated, "When working on a cherished character like Batman, we realized that the key is to create the best film possible while offering your interpretation."

He hopes that fans of The Odyssey appreciate the respect shown to the original material through their adaptation.

When asked about his background in literature, Nolan humorously replied, "I studied literature at university, but not very well. So I don’t have much of a literature background. But on paper, I do."

Produced by Universal Pictures and Syncopy, The Odyssey features a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Samantha Morton.
