Chris Evans has finally shared the reasons behind his decision to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after previously declining numerous offers. The actor, who said goodbye to his character Steve Rogers in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, explained that while Marvel Studios had proposed various ideas to continue Captain America's narrative, none resonated with him until a significant moment occurred. He elaborated on how Avengers: Doomsday became the ideal project for his much-anticipated comeback as the beloved character.
Chris Evans on His Decision to Reprise Captain America
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly's Gerrad Hall at San Diego Comic-Con, Evans revealed his motivations for stepping back into the role of Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, in Avengers: Doomsday. The 45-year-old actor mentioned that after Endgame, Marvel Studios had approached him with several concepts, but he was reluctant to continue Steve Rogers' journey. He recounted a dinner invitation from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D'Esposito shortly after filming Endgame in 2018, where they expressed their desire to keep making films featuring Steve Rogers as Nomad, one of his alternate identities in the comics.
Evans noted that while Marvel executives presented a comprehensive plan to further Steve's story, it didn't feel right to him at that moment. He admitted to being protective of the character's legacy following Endgame, but encouraged them to keep pitching ideas. Over the next eight years, he received numerous proposals for Captain America's return, but nothing clicked.
Robert Downey Jr.'s Influence on Evans' Decision
The turning point came when Evans learned that his longtime co-star Robert Downey Jr. was in discussions to return to the franchise. "I received a call from my team about the rumors of Robert Downey Jr. talking to Marvel," Evans recalled. This news shifted everything for him. "Suddenly, it felt right. Joe Russo pitched the idea to me, and with Downey back, it just clicked," he shared.
Robert Downey Jr., who portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man for over a decade before his character's poignant exit in Avengers: Endgame, is set to return in Avengers: Doomsday, this time taking on the role of the iconic villain Doctor Doom, marking a significant departure from his previous character. While Evans is excited about his return to the MCU, he emphasized that he is not doing it merely for nostalgia. He concluded by stating, "This franchise has earned its place over time. You don't want to jeopardize that."
