Chennai Super Kings Restructures Coaching Staff Ahead of 2027 IPL Season
CSK Announces Major Coaching Staff Changes
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has expressed gratitude to Michael Hussey, their long-time batting coach, as he concludes an eight-year tenure with the team. This change comes as the five-time IPL champions prepare for the 2027 season and revamp their support staff.
The franchise also confirmed that bowling coach Eric Simons, who has been with CSK since 2018, will be leaving, along with several other backroom staff members. This restructuring follows three disappointing seasons in the IPL.
Honoring Long-Serving Coaches
In a heartfelt tribute, CSK acknowledged Hussey's significant contributions, which began in the inaugural IPL season of 2008 when he played for the team. After six seasons as a player, he returned as batting coach in 2018, collaborating with head coach Stephen Fleming. CSK's Instagram post highlighted his integral role, stating, "Your journey in Yellow has been defined not just by the runs you scored and the players you mentored, but by the dedication, humility, and unwavering commitment you brought to this franchise over the years."
Hussey was part of CSK's coaching team during their championship victories in 2018, 2021, and 2023. His departure signifies the end of a notable chapter with the franchise. Simons, who also leaves after eight seasons, was recognized for his contributions to the bowling unit, with CSK thanking him for his role in the team's success.
Acknowledging Contributions to Team Fitness and Development
CSK expressed appreciation for Greg King, who contributed to the team's fitness and conditioning programs, emphasizing the importance of preparation and hard work. The franchise noted, "Your expertise in strength and conditioning has helped our Super Kings overcome physical challenges and perform at the highest level across seasons."
Tommy Simsek, who has been with CSK since its inception in 2008, was also recognized for his dedication to player fitness, especially during the era known as 'Dad's Army'. CSK thanked him for his invaluable role in the team's journey.
Rajiv Kumar, another key member of the coaching staff, was acknowledged for his significant contributions to player development and team preparation.
Looking Forward to the 2027 Season
As part of the restructuring, former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the head coach, while Mohit Sharma has taken on the role of bowling coach. Gareth Batty, who led Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024, will join the franchise as an assistant coach for IPL 2027.
This overhaul comes after a challenging period for CSK, which saw them finish fifth in 2024, last in 2025, and eighth in 2026, following their IPL victory in 2023. With a new coaching team under Zaheer, CSK aims to regain consistency and compete for the title in the upcoming season.
