However, this limited screening will only take place in Chennai and Chengalpattu, making it a unique regional event. The film tells the story of Maaran, a doctor who provides affordable medical care while secretly acting as a vigilante against corruption in the healthcare system. The narrative unfolds as his past is revealed following his arrest, contributing to the film's gripping plot. Mersal was a significant box office hit and is still regarded as one of Vijay’s standout performances.

Featuring a stellar cast including Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, SJ Suryah, Vadivelu, and Sathyaraj, Mersal was produced by Thenandal Studio Limited as their 100th project. The film boasts a soundtrack by AR Rahman, cinematography by GK Vishnu, and editing by Ruben.

Initially scheduled for a January 9 release, the film faced delays due to issues with CBFC certification. Although the regional panel suggested a UA 16+ rating, the final approval has yet to be granted. KVN Productions sought intervention from the Madras High Court to expedite the process, but a division bench later stayed the order. In February 2026, the producers withdrew their case and opted to resubmit the film through the standard CBFC process. KVN Productions has since taken full control of the release strategy after refunding distributor advances. The film also stars Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, and Prakash Raj.
