Pandavani Icon Teejan Bai Dies, Leaving a Legacy
Famed Pandavani performer Teejan Bai, who played a pivotal role in showcasing Chhattisgarh’s folk heritage to the world, passed away early Sunday at AIIMS Raipur. She succumbed to a long-term illness around 3:15 AM, leaving a profound sense of loss within the cultural and artistic circles of India. Teejan Bai was renowned for her captivating voice and her ability to narrate stories, which brought the Pandavani tradition to life for audiences globally.
Tributes for the Legendary Teejan Bai
Through her dynamic performances, she vividly portrayed tales from the Mahabharata, significantly enhancing the visibility of Chhattisgarh’s folk culture through numerous shows both domestically and internationally. Her daughter-in-law, Renu Teejan Bai, confirmed her passing and mentioned that the last rites would be conducted in Ganiyari village following traditional customs. The Government of India recognized her extraordinary contributions to folk arts by awarding her the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and later the Padma Vibhushan, which is the second-highest civilian honor in the country.
In addition to these honors, she received numerous accolades, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. In 2007, she was honored with the title of Nritya Shiromani, and in 2017, she was awarded an honorary D.Litt. degree from Khairagarh Music University. Throughout her career, she received four honorary D.Litt. degrees and was awarded the prestigious Fukuoka Prize in Japan for her artistic contributions. One of her most notable performances, which depicted the defeat of Dushasana in the Pandavani style, garnered significant acclaim. In 1980, she served as a cultural ambassador, showcasing Indian culture in various countries including England, France, and Germany.

Condolences have flooded in from across the nation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his sorrow over the loss of the legendary artist. In a message shared on X, he conveyed his deep sadness regarding her passing, highlighting how her powerful performances gave a unique identity to Chhattisgarh’s folk art on the international stage. He described her death as an irreparable loss to the artistic community and extended his sympathies to her family and fans, praying for her soul's peace.
Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also paid tribute, noting that Teejan Bai, a recipient of both the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan, brought significant recognition to Chhattisgarh through her folk performances. He honored her contributions to the arts and offered prayers for her soul while providing support to her grieving family during this challenging time.
