The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) has revealed that actress Carrie Coon will be the first-ever recipient of its newly created Luminary Award in the acting category. This prestigious accolade celebrates outstanding achievement and a deep commitment to the art of cinema. Alongside receiving the award, the star of The White Lotus will engage in an extensive discussion regarding her career and artistic journey during the festival, which kicks off on October 1.
In addition to honoring her acting prowess, the festival will showcase Coon’s forthcoming film, The Liberation. This event serves as a gathering point for filmmakers, producers, and industry experts, and will also recognize director Markus Schleinzer for his directing contributions and Leah Nelson for her achievements in screenwriting.

The VIFF Talks series is set to commence on October 3, featuring a conversation with editor Matthew Hannam. Renowned for his work on films like Halina Reijn’s Babygirl and Noah Baumbach’s White Noise, Hannam will discuss his collaborative approach and career beginnings in Winnipeg, where he worked with Canadian filmmakers such as Guy Maddin.
On October 4, producer Haley Johnson will provide insights into the making of Obsession, detailing the film's journey from a modest budget to global acclaim, which ultimately led to a studio bidding war after its Toronto premiere.
Production designers Brandon Tonner-Connolly and Matt Hyland will take the stage on October 5 to explore the creative process behind the immersive environment of Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The series will wrap up on October 7 with a presentation by Mark Mothersbaugh, co-founder of DEVO and composer known for his long-standing collaboration with director Wes Anderson on films like Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Additionally, the festival will spotlight its Composer Filmmaker Accelerator, aimed at connecting emerging composers with filmmakers through mentorship. Curated by three-time Emmy-nominated composer Miriam Cutler, the program will host its 2026 showcase on October 8. Other notable attendees expected at the festival include Daniel Dae Kim, Rick Hansen, and directors Marie Clements, Matthew Rankin, and Zach Lipovsky.
