Cannes Film Market: South Asian Storytelling Takes Center Stage
Exploring South Asian Narratives at Cannes
Tasveer recently organized the sole official South Asian panel at the Cannes Marché du Film, bringing together key figures from entertainment, technology, audience analytics, and independent filmmaking. The session, titled "Reimagining Global Pathways and Financing for Stories That Travel," focused on the evolving landscape of international co-productions, audience insights, responsible AI, creator ownership, and sustainable financing models essential for the future of independent storytelling.
Rita Meher, the Founder of Tasveer, moderated the panel, which included industry leaders like Guneet Monga Kapoor, Arathi Sethumadhavan, Anjana Gopakumar, and Jaime Otero. Meher kicked off the discussion by highlighting the growing momentum of South Asian storytelling and the urgent need for creators to shift from simple representation to ownership, establishing lasting infrastructure within the global entertainment framework. "The time when South Asian cinema merely sought entry into global entertainment is behind us; we are now constructing our own infrastructure, owning our intellectual property, and forging our own paths," Meher asserted.
The dialogue emphasized how South Asian stories are increasingly resonating with global audiences through cross-border partnerships, audience insights, and technology-enhanced production ecosystems. The panelists explored how data analytics can help regional content reach beyond diaspora audiences, while responsible AI and localization tools are creating new opportunities for independent creators to present culturally rich narratives on a worldwide stage.
A key focus of the session was on creator ownership and the establishment of sustainable business models. The discussions highlighted the importance of protecting intellectual property, creating long-term value, and enhancing global pathways for independent South Asian storytellers. This emphasis reflects a growing awareness of the necessity for strong frameworks that assist creators in navigating the complexities of the entertainment industry.
The session wrapped up with an engaging audience Q&A that covered topics such as co-productions, AI ethics, regional cinema distribution, and the future of culturally authentic storytelling in the global entertainment landscape. Supported by Google and Shivam Gupta Casting, the panel underscored Cannes' increasing recognition of South Asian storytelling as a vital cultural and commercial force shaping the future of global entertainment.
