Can The Mummy Outshine Paranormal Activity at the Box Office?
The Mummy's Box Office Journey
Lee Cronin's horror reboot, The Mummy, is making waves at the box office, achieving impressive results despite its limited budget. While its performance in the domestic market has been underwhelming, the film is faring well internationally. Notably, it has outperformed the domestic earnings of the least successful film in the Paranormal Activity series. As it continues to screen, speculation arises about its potential to surpass the other five films in the franchise.
Upon its debut, The Mummy garnered mixed to unfavorable reviews and has since slipped from first to fourth place in the North American box office rankings. In its second weekend, the film brought in $5.5 million, marking a 59.3% drop from its opening weekend. Over a span of ten days, it has amassed $23.3 million in North America, showcasing a consistent, albeit not explosive, performance.
The sixth film in the Paranormal Activity series, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, directed by Gregory Plotkin, holds the record for the lowest box office earnings in North America. This installment, which does not feature series staple Katie Featherston, managed to gross $18.3 million domestically. The Mummy has now surpassed this figure, representing a notable achievement for the reboot, even if it doesn't signify a major milestone in the overall box office landscape.
While The Ghost Dimension remains the lowest-grossing entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise, it is part of a long-standing and commercially viable series. Industry analysts predict that The Mummy is on course to earn between $32 million and $37 million domestically, which would enable it to surpass another film in the franchise, The Marked Ones, during its theatrical run.
The Mummy revolves around a family that reconnects with their long-lost, mummified daughter, only to uncover unsettling truths. Released on April 9, the film continues to draw interest as it competes within the horror genre.
