Buffy Reboot Canceled: Sarah Michelle Gellar Shares Heartbreaking News
Buffy Reboot Project Comes to an End
The anticipated reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has officially been scrapped. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred in the original series and served as an executive producer for the reboot titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, announced via Instagram that Hulu has decided not to move forward with the series. The pilot episode was penned by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, known for Poker Face, and directed by Chloé Zhao of Hamnet fame. Gellar expressed her disappointment to fans who were eager to see her return to the iconic role of Buffy Summers, which she first portrayed in 1997 for seven seasons on The WB.
Gellar Breaks the News of Cancellation
After a year since Hulu ordered the pilot, Gellar took to Instagram to share the unfortunate news about the cancellation of New Sunnydale. She expressed her sadness but felt it was important for fans to hear it directly from her. Gellar thanked Buffy superfan Chloé Zhao and reflected on how much the character meant to her and the audience. The actress, now 48, reminisced about her time as Buffy two decades ago.
While filming, Gellar was reminded of her love for the character and the impact she had on fans. She concluded her video with a promise that if an apocalypse were to occur, fans could still reach out to her. In the comments, many heartbroken fans tagged various streaming platforms like HBO Max, Netflix, and Apple TV, hoping they might consider picking up the show. They also expressed their unwavering support for Gellar.
Details on the Reboot's Cast
Alongside Gellar and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who was set to play the young Slayer, the reboot cast included Faly Rakotohavana as Hugo, Ava Jean as Larkin, Sarah Bock as Gracie, Daniel Di Tomasso as Abe, and Jack Cutmore-Scott as Mr. Burke. Additionally, Chase Sui Wonders made a guest appearance as a vampire named Shirley. Reports indicated that the pilot's future had been in limbo for some time, with sources suggesting that the reboot was not without its flaws and that Zhao's vision might not have aligned with the show's needs. Nevertheless, there are indications that Hulu remains interested in the Buffy franchise and may explore new adaptations in the future.
