BTS has made a grand return with their latest album, ARIRANG. After a four-year hiatus, the boy band has set new personal records for first-week sales. Despite achieving remarkable numbers, they fell short of the top position in K-pop history, trailing behind a few other prominent groups. Which K-pop Groups Surpassed BTS in Sales?
As per the data from Hanteo Chart released on March 27 KST, ARIRANG sold an impressive 4,169,464 copies in its first week. This figure surpasses BTS's previous record with Map of the Soul: 7, which sold approximately 3.37 million copies during its debut week. This achievement highlights BTS's enduring popularity, even after a lengthy break, and confirms that their fanbase, known as ARMY, remains loyal.
Currently, BTS ranks fourth on the all-time sales list, behind SEVENTEEN and Stray Kids. SEVENTEEN's Seventeenth Heaven leads the pack with over 5 million copies sold, followed by Stray Kids's 5-STAR and another SEVENTEEN album, FML. Although BTS did not secure the top spot, their accomplishment is significant given the changing landscape of album sales in the industry.
Released on March 20 KST, ARIRANG marks BTS's first full-group album in nearly four years. During their absence, the K-pop industry has seen a dramatic rise in album sales, particularly in 2023 and 2024. Despite missing the peak sales window, BTS has still managed to secure a spot among the top five highest first-week album sales in K-pop history, which is commendable. The question remains: will K-pop groups ever achieve more than 5 million sales again?
ARIRANG's Global Impact
In addition to impressive physical sales, ARIRANG has dominated digital platforms worldwide. The album has reached the number one position on iTunes charts across 115 countries. The title track, SWIM, has also excelled, topping Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global chart for six consecutive days from March 20 to March 25. It is anticipated that SWIM will debut in the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Furthermore, BTS plans to release a remix album titled Keep Swimming, which will feature seven unique versions of SWIM, each tailored to the individual preferences of the seven members. This strategy aims to prolong the album's lifecycle and maintain the momentum of their comeback, potentially boosting sales further. Another significant milestone achieved with this release is BTS surpassing 30 million cumulative album sales on the Hanteo chart since their debut, solidifying their status as one of the most successful artists in K-pop history.
ARIRANG includes a diverse array of tracks such as Body to Body, Hooligan, Aliens, FYA, 2.0, No. 29, Merry Go Round, NORMAL, Like Animals, they don't know 'bout us, One More Night, Please, and Into the Sun. The group is also set to embark on a World Tour to connect with their fans.
