Legal Battle Over Sridevi's Chennai Property

The property of the late actress Sridevi, situated on East Coast Road in Chennai, has been embroiled in a legal dispute for nearly a year. Recent reports indicate that her husband, Boney Kapoor, along with their daughters, Janhvi and Khushi, have approached the Madras High Court following the dismissal of a civil suit by an additional district court in Chengalpattu concerning 4.7 acres of land acquired by Sridevi. The actress passed away in 2018 in the UAE, and the legal proceedings began in 2025 when Boney filed a complaint alleging that three individuals were unlawfully asserting rights over the property.

According to a report from a local media outlet, Justice T.V. Thamilselvi has scheduled a hearing for the Kapoor family's petition on March 26, while also extending the interim order that halts the trial.

Understanding the Dispute

Reports reveal that MC Sivakami, her sister MC Natarajan, and their mother, Chandrabhanu, are claiming a stake in the land owned by Sridevi and are seeking to nullify four sale deeds through which the actress and her sister acquired the property. Boney clarified in court that Sridevi purchased the land in 1988 from M.C. Sambanda Mudaliar, whose family had divided the property in 1960. Sridevi ensured all legal documents were verified and the sale deed was properly registered before the purchase.

Furthermore, the three individuals assert they have a shared claim to the property, alleging to be the second wife and children of one of Mudaliar's sons. They obtained a legal heirship certificate from the Tambaram Tahsildar in 2005, which Boney contested, questioning the authority of the revenue official to issue such a certificate given that the landowner's family resided in Mylapore, not Tambaram.

Boney further argued that the claims regarding the second wife’s marriage in 1975 might be inaccurate, as the first wife passed away in 1999. He contended that the three individuals do not qualify as legal heirs under the Hindu Succession Act and urged for the cancellation of the heirship certificate promptly. Recently, Janhvi celebrated her 29th birthday at Sridevi’s luxurious Chennai residence, surrounded by friends and family.
