Bollywood Stars Rally Behind Students Amid Protests: A Call for Dialogue and Empathy
Support from Bollywood for Student Protests
Mumbai: A number of prominent figures from the Hindi film industry, including Pooja Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Genelia Deshmukh, have voiced their support for students following reports of violence during a march to Jantar Mantar as part of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest.
These actors utilized social media platforms to emphasize the necessity of acknowledging the voices of the youth, fostering dialogue, and addressing students' issues with respect and compassion. Pooja Bhatt shared on Instagram, stating, “When law enforcement resorts to tear gas and batons against students, it ultimately serves to protect the state. Such violence is often justified under the guise of 'law and order,' as suppressing dissent maintains the power of those in authority.”
Sonakshi Sinha expressed her sentiments with a poignant message: “On July 20th, many suffered injuries, and the heart of an entire nation broke. Remember this.”
Aditi Rao Hydari elaborated in a heartfelt note, saying, “Regardless of political affiliations, humanity must take precedence. We need to create a safe space founded on respect, dignity, and empathy for our courageous students and all those striving to be heard, with a sincere commitment to constructive dialogue. Listening to each other is essential for meaningful progress. Our students represent our future.”
Genelia Deshmukh also showed her support, stating, “We stand united with the youth of our nation. Their voices must resonate—loudly, clearly, and without fear. They embody the spirit of our democracy and are the true builders of our country’s future. Let us listen, uplift, and empower them. Reports indicate that security forces used tear gas to disperse a significant crowd of CJP supporters who had gathered in Delhi for a march towards Parliament.
This protest was organized in response to alleged discrepancies in the NEET medical entrance examination and included calls for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The demonstration coincided with activist Sonam Wangchuk's ongoing hunger strike, during which he was hospitalized at Safdarjung Hospital after being moved there by the Delhi Police.
