Ongoing Legal Dispute Between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni

The legal conflict involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni continues to unfold. Although Baldoni's defamation lawsuit was dismissed, Lively has now filed a request for nearly $8 million to cover her attorney fees and legal costs incurred while defending against Baldoni's claims. This indicates that the tension between the two has not subsided, as Lively is prepared to pursue her demands in court.

Blake Lively's Request for $8 Million

Recent court filings reveal that Blake Lively is seeking around $8 million (approximately 75 crore INR) in legal fees following the dismissal of Justin Baldoni's defamation lawsuit last year. Her legal representatives have stated that she incurred about $7.5 million in attorney fees while defending herself against Baldoni's $400 million lawsuit, which was initiated by him and his production company, Wayfarer Studios. Additionally, Lively has reported spending around $540,000 on various legal expenses, bringing her total claim to nearly $8 million. Billing records indicate that some attorneys charged rates as high as $2,187 per hour during the litigation.

In their latest submission, Lively's legal team argued that granting her legal fees would serve as a deterrent against similar lawsuits in the future. The motion claims that the legal action was intended to intimidate and retaliate against Lively rather than to succeed in court. It further stated that the lawsuit aimed to portray her as dishonest, influence witnesses and media narratives, and discourage others from speaking out.

Despite the significant amount requested, the nearly $8 million figure reportedly represents only a fraction of the total expenses Lively incurred during the 18 months of legal proceedings. This request does not encompass costs related to her own lawsuit against Baldoni and others, which involved extensive discovery, depositions, document reviews, legal motions, and public relations efforts. Lively ultimately withdrew her lawsuit shortly before the trial was set to begin in May, and no financial settlement was reached between the parties.

Background of the It Ends With Us Controversy

The conflict began when Lively accused her co-star and director Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment during the filming of It Ends With Us. She also claimed that Baldoni had initiated an online campaign against her after she expressed concerns about her treatment. Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios vehemently denied these allegations and filed a $400 million defamation lawsuit against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, accusing them of using false claims to tarnish Baldoni's reputation and gain creative control over the film.

The defamation lawsuit was ultimately dismissed after the court ruled that Lively's allegations were protected under litigation privilege. Judge Lewis Liman later determined that Lively was eligible for attorney fees under a California law enacted in 2023, designed to protect individuals reporting sexual abuse or harassment from retaliatory defamation lawsuits. However, the judge denied her request for additional damages, allowing her to continue seeking compensation specifically for the legal costs associated with defending against the defamation claims. So far, Baldoni's legal team has not publicly commented on Lively's demands.
