Mumbai, Aug 18: Rupa Umashankar Dutta, a Bengali actress, has been released on bail following her arrest related to a theft incident involving Rs 1.48 lakh in Mumbai's Colaba area. The Metropolitan Magistrate Court approved her bail.
According to her lawyer, Sunil Pandey, the court set her bail at a personal bond of Rs 50,000, instructing her not to interfere with evidence or exit the country without prior approval. This case originated from a complaint lodged by Dimple Singhvi, a resident of Marine Drive.
The complaint detailed that Singhvi's purse was stolen on July 12, 2026, while she was navigating through busy streets between Babulnath Temple and Colaba. The purse contained a diamond-studded gold bracelet valued at approximately Rs 1.20 lakh, Rs 10,000 in cash, Apple AirPods worth around Rs 15,000, a wallet, and various personal documents.
In response to the complaint, the Colaba Police initiated an investigation. During their inquiry, they reviewed CCTV footage that purportedly depicted Rupa Dutta trailing the complainant, leading to her arrest.
Authorities also claimed to have retrieved some of the stolen items from her possession.
Rupa Dutta has appeared in numerous Hindi and Bengali films, including the movie 'Saathi' and the Hindi television series 'Jai Maa Vaishno Devi.'
'Saathi', released in 2005, narrates the story of Varsha, who assists Anjali in marrying her true love, Akash, rather than Vijay, whom her father prefers. Varsha ultimately leads Vijay to develop feelings for Anjali.
'Jai Maa Vaishno Devi' portrays the divine and the devotees, blending devotional storytelling with family drama. The series focuses on the tales of Mata Vaishno Devi and the transformative impact she has on her followers' lives.
The cast includes Pracheen Chauhan as Shridhar Pandit, a devoted follower of the Goddess, and Chahat Khanna as his virtuous wife, Sunaina.
Previously, in 2022, Dutta faced arrest due to allegations of pickpocketing at the Kolkata Book Fair.
Her attorney, Sunil Pandey, contended that Rupa Dutta was wrongfully accused and merely a victim of circumstances. After considering the arguments, the court granted her bail.
