Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang Resigns Amid Allegations of Foreign Influence
Controversial Resignation of Arcadia's Mayor
The recent resignation of Eileen Wang, the 58-year-old mayor of Arcadia, has captured national attention due to serious allegations that she acted as an illegal foreign agent for China. This surprising development has ignited considerable debate within California's political arena. Wang's departure followed her agreement to plead guilty in a high-profile case that has reverberated through the state's political community.
Federal prosecutors have charged Wang with promoting pro-China propaganda in the U.S. on behalf of individuals associated with the Chinese government, facing a potential maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison. Authorities allege that she and her accomplice operated under the radar to sway Chinese-American audiences while masquerading as typical community leaders. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli highlighted the seriousness of the matter, asserting that those who covertly serve foreign interests jeopardize the democratic framework of the United States.
Investigators suggest that Wang's image as a political figure and community supporter masked a broader scheme. The U.S. Department of Justice claims that Wang and her partner ran a media outlet called U.S. News Centre, which was allegedly a regular Chinese-American news site. However, prosecutors argue that this platform was used to spread propaganda supplied by individuals linked to Beijing, raising alarming questions about foreign interference in the U.S.
Originally from China, Eileen Wang rose to prominence after being elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022. She relocated to Southern California nearly three decades ago seeking new opportunities. Reports indicate that she hails from a medical family, with her mother practicing traditional Chinese medicine and her father serving as a physician in Sichuan province. Wang is also a mother of two and has lived in Arcadia for almost twenty years.
Yaoning Mike Sun has become a significant figure in the federal investigation surrounding Wang. Prosecutors allege that Sun was Wang's co-conspirator in the effort to spread pro-China propaganda in the U.S. Federal authorities claim that the duo worked together on initiatives related to political influence and media messaging targeting Chinese-American audiences. Court documents reveal that Sun pleaded guilty in October 2025 to acting as an illegal agent for a foreign government and was later sentenced to 48 months in federal prison.
