Anupam Kher Reflects on His Struggles and Triumphs in Mumbai
Anupam Kher's Journey Through Hardship
Before establishing himself as a prominent figure in Indian cinema, Anupam Kher faced significant challenges, including loneliness and self-doubt, during his early days in Mumbai. In a heartfelt discussion with the Editor-in-Chief of a major media outlet, Navika Kumar, Kher shared how he navigated through tough times by envisioning a world where he always triumphed. He recounted a particularly difficult month spent sleeping on a railway platform in Bandra East, where he confronted issues of dignity and depression, ultimately finding the emotional resilience to pursue his dreams. A poignant memory involving a letter from his grandfather profoundly shifted his outlook on adversity.
Anupam Kher's 27 Days on a Railway Platform
Reflecting on his mental coping mechanisms during those challenging times, Anupam Kher stated, "To cope with my struggles, I created a fantasy world where I was always victorious. In the end, the hero always wins. So, I was the hero of my own life." He revealed, "I spent 27 days sleeping on a railway platform in Bandra East." Over time, these experiences shaped his life philosophy. He noted, "What seems like a setback today often becomes a story worth telling years later." Even now, he strives to view difficult situations through this lens.
However, Anupam clarified that his positive outlook did not mean he was immune to emotional pain. He candidly admitted to feeling depressed and humiliated during that period. "It wasn't that I didn't feel sad or broken," he confessed. He recalled the humiliation of sleeping on railway platforms despite being well-educated, saying, "I even considered going back home because nothing felt more degrading. The lack of dignity was overwhelming. As a gold medalist, I felt the sting of humiliation more acutely."
A Letter from His Grandfather
During this tough phase, Anupam also wrote an emotional letter to his grandfather. He reminisced about the significance of letter-writing back then, saying, "Dear Grandfather, what am I doing in this city? I’m sleeping on a railway platform and I don’t want to be here." He expressed to his grandfather that Mumbai was unworthy of him.
His grandfather's response, which reached his then-close friend and now wife Kirron Kher, became a pivotal moment in his life. Anupam recalled his grandfather's words: "Beta Bittu, I understand your situation, but remember your parents have sacrificed a lot for you." One line from the letter resonated deeply with him: "Stop and remember, a drenched man does not fear the rain." This wisdom has stayed with him ever since.
