Amartya Ray Takes on a New Role in 'Nevermind'

After winning hearts as Chuni Goswami in Ajay Devgn’s film Maidaan, actor Amartya Ray is gearing up for his next project, which is particularly special as it marks the directorial debut of his mother, the esteemed Chaiti Ghoshal. The film, titled Nevermind, features Amartya alongside National Award-winning actress Rituparna Sengupta. He describes this project as significant, especially since it showcases his mother’s first venture into directing, and emphasizes that it is tailored for the modern Bengali audience.

In an exclusive interview, Amartya shared his thoughts on collaborating with both Rituparna and his mother, calling Rituparna a “charming” person. He expressed, “Working with Rituparna Sengupta was a true honor.” He also reflected on his experience with Ajay Devgn in Maidaan, noting that a similar enriching experience unfolded in Nevermind.

“The difference is that Ritu di has known me for a long time—almost since I was a child,” he added. “Everyone knows Rituparna's engaging personality, which made our interactions very comfortable. As a young actor, I felt encouraged to share my ideas, and she welcomed them, creating a collaborative atmosphere that felt very organic.”

When discussing his experience working under Chaiti Ghoshal’s direction, Amartya described it as “challenging,” but clarified that it was not in the traditional sense. He explained, “Collaborating with my mother was challenging—not in a negative way, but because of our relationship. I was involved in both the directorial and writing processes, which made my role extensive and deeply integrated. I have embodied this character for quite some time.”

When asked why Chaiti chose him for her directorial debut, Amartya responded, “I have studied direction and worked on Maidaan. She chose me not just because I’m her son, but because she believed that if anyone else were to make this film in Bengal, they would have cast me as well. Our communication was quicker, and we understood each other well, which made the collaboration seamless. This experience will be a cherished memory for me.”

Nevermind, produced and presented by Rituparna Sengupta, tells the story of a single day in the life of Trina Lahiri (played by Rituparna), a woman from the UK who returns to Kolkata in search of something meaningful. Her journey leads her to a bar on Kolkata's iconic Park Street named Nevermind, where she meets an Anglo-Indian bar singer, Jude Sebastian. As the night unfolds, Nevermind becomes a setting where various truths surface and vulnerabilities are exposed. Amartya explains that the film essentially depicts a chance encounter between Trina and Jude, exploring whether a single night can change a person's life.

When asked if he keeps in touch with Ajay Devgn after Maidaan, Amartya mentioned that he has shared the trailer and poster of Nevermind with the actor, who, along with director Amit Ravindernath, has sent his best wishes for this new project.
