AICWA Appeals to PM Modi for Support Amid Economic Challenges in Film Industry
Concerns Raised by AICWA Regarding Film Workers' Welfare
The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, voicing serious concerns about the deteriorating conditions faced by workers in the Indian film sector. The association pointed out that the industry is still in recovery mode following the significant setbacks experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in numerous workers, junior artists, and technicians losing their jobs or enduring substantial salary reductions. In their correspondence, AICWA emphasized that escalating fuel prices, inflation, global economic pressures, and rising production costs are presenting new hurdles for films, television shows, web series, and advertisements.
AICWA cautioned that if these issues persist, there could be a further decline in job opportunities within the entertainment sector, adversely impacting daily wage workers.
AICWA's Letter Highlights Ongoing Struggles
AICWA Reaches Out to PM Modi Amid Global Economic Challenges
In their letter, AICWA reiterated that during the pandemic, countless workers, technicians, and junior artists in the Indian film industry faced job losses and significant pay cuts. Many daily wage earners were compelled to seek low-paying jobs outside the industry for survival. The association noted that numerous small and medium production companies closed down during this crisis, leading to a decrease in job opportunities across films, television, and advertising. Even post-pandemic, the industry continues to grapple with reduced shoots, job losses, and uncertainty, prompting many workers to exit the profession permanently.
They warned that if the current global economic crisis and financial instability persist, the Indian film industry could see a drastic decline in the production of films, television series, web series, advertising shoots, and other entertainment-related projects due to rising operational costs, dwindling investments, and a decrease in financial capacity within the sector.

Film Stars Urged to Reconsider High Fees
The cinema body has called on the government and industry stakeholders to safeguard workers' salaries and jobs during this challenging time. They also urged prominent stars and production houses to cut unnecessary expenses to ensure job security and timely payments. An excerpt from their letter stated, "AICWA believes that at such a critical time, major stars, large production houses, and financially robust stakeholders of the industry should seriously reconsider excessive remuneration and non-essential expenditure to protect workers’ employment, timely payments, and dignity." Furthermore, they suggested prioritizing Indian shooting locations over foreign ones to generate more local jobs.
AICWA also appealed to the Government of India and state governments to establish welfare emergency funds and worker-friendly policies to assist film industry workers during economic downturns. The association stressed that stronger measures are essential to prevent another economic and humanitarian crisis within the film sector.
