Mumbai, September 7: Renowned singer and composer Adnan Sami has shared insights into how his life transformed following his acquisition of Indian citizenship.
During a discussion with trade analyst Komal Nahta on the show "Game Changers: The Music Series," Adnan elaborated on the changes he experienced post-citizenship, stating, “It was never challenging for me to find work in India as a Pakistani citizen. However, everything shifted once I became an Indian citizen. I became a part of India, and India became a part of me.”
For those unfamiliar, Adnan Sami officially became a naturalized citizen of India on January 1, 2016. He first arrived in India in March 2001 on a visitor visa and subsequently carved out a successful career in the Indian music scene. His path to citizenship began when his Pakistani passport expired in 2015 and was not renewed, prompting him to seek legal residency in India on humanitarian grounds.
The Ministry of Home Affairs granted him Indian citizenship under Section 6(1) of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which allows for naturalization, particularly for individuals who have made significant contributions to art and culture.
In a previous interview, Sami mentioned that his choice to relocate to India stemmed from the limited opportunities and support he faced in the Pakistani music industry. He recalled the encouragement he received from the legendary Asha Bhosle, which significantly influenced his decision to explore opportunities in India.
Sami expressed gratitude towards India for embracing his music and providing him with a platform to showcase his talent.
Beginning his musical career in the early 1990s, Adnan Sami gradually became a well-known figure in the Indian music industry, thanks to his popular albums and Hindi songs.
He gained widespread recognition with his album “Kabhi To Nazar Milao,” which achieved remarkable success. Known for his versatility, Sami has delved into various genres, including Indian classical, pop, and film music. In acknowledgment of his artistic contributions, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2020.
