Aamir Khan Rejects ₹120 Crore OTT Deal for Sitaare Zameen Par

Aamir Khan has made headlines by rejecting a lucrative ₹120 crore offer from Amazon Prime Video for the OTT rights of his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par. This decision is rooted in his desire to promote the traditional cinema experience over the growing trend of quick digital releases. Scheduled for release on June 20, the film is a spiritual sequel to his 2007 classic, Taare Zameen Par, and features Aamir as a basketball coach for players with special needs. While this bold move could potentially revive cinema attendance, it also poses a financial risk for Aamir if the film fails to attract viewers.

Aamir Khan's Bold Move Against OTT Releases

In a surprising turn of events, Aamir Khan has turned down a staggering ₹120 crore offer from a major streaming service for the OTT rights of his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par. According to trade analyst Komal Nahta, this decision is not merely about financial gain but rather a strategic move to challenge the trend of rapid digital releases following theatrical showings.

Nahta revealed that Aamir's intention is to advocate for the traditional cinema experience, emphasizing that films should be enjoyed on the big screen. He stated, "What many may not realize is that Aamir declined the ₹120 crore offer from Amazon Prime Video not out of greed or a desire for a bidding war, but because he aims to shift the current paradigm."

This decision comes at a time when audiences often prefer to wait for films to be available on streaming platforms instead of purchasing theater tickets. Nahta elaborated, "Aamir is determined to change this mindset. The offer from Amazon was incredibly tempting, yet he believes that withholding the film from OTT could potentially increase cinema attendance, revitalizing the industry and boosting box office revenues. This could also inspire other producers to reconsider their digital release strategies."

However, if the film does not attract significant audiences to theaters, Aamir risks losing the ₹120 crore he turned down.

Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par is a spiritual sequel to Aamir's iconic 2007 film, Taare Zameen Par, and is scheduled for release on June 20. In this new installment, Aamir portrays a basketball coach mentoring a team of players with special needs. The film features Genelia D'Souza and is based on the Spanish film Campeones.

Recently, the film faced a challenge when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) requested two cuts, which Aamir initially resisted to maintain the film's creative integrity. Ultimately, the CBFC granted official clearance for the film.
