Aamir Khan Reflects on Laapataa Ladies' Box Office Performance and OTT Impact

Aamir Khan Discusses Laapataa Ladies' Box Office Results
Aamir Khan recently opened up about the box office results of his 2024 film, Laapataa Ladies, suggesting that its early release on OTT platforms may have hindered its success in theaters. In an interview with a media outlet, Aamir emphasized that box office figures serve as a clear and objective measure of a film's reception among viewers.
He stated, “In the end, the box office provides a definitive benchmark. While reviews can vary—some viewers enjoy a film while others do not—the box office numbers are impartial. They indicate how much revenue a film has generated, which is a reliable gauge of its popularity. Unless there’s a particular reason for a film's poor performance, the box office results reflect its appeal,” he explained.
Laapataa Ladies premiered in theaters on March 1, 2024, but transitioned to Netflix just eight weeks later, on April 26. Aamir believes this quick shift to streaming limited the film's box office potential, stating, “I genuinely think Laapataa Ladies would have performed exceptionally well in cinemas if it hadn’t moved to Netflix so soon. The audience response was overwhelmingly positive. In my view, had it not been released on Netflix so quickly, it would have achieved significant success.”
Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan Productions in collaboration with Kindling Pictures and Jio Studios, is a satirical comedy-drama that explores gender issues and patriarchy in rural India. The narrative revolves around two brides who are mistakenly swapped during a train journey, leading to a humorous yet insightful examination of societal norms. The film features actors Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan, grossing Rs24.31 crore in India and Rs27.06 crore globally during its 13-week theatrical run.
On another note, Aamir Khan is preparing to make his return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, co-starring Genelia Deshmukh, which is scheduled for release on June 20. This film serves as a spiritual sequel to his highly regarded Taare Zameen Par and is a remake of the 2018 Spanish film Champions.
