Aamir Khan Clarifies 3 Idiots' Inspiration Amid Sonam Wangchuk Controversy
The Ongoing Debate Surrounding 3 Idiots
Following Aamir Khan's recent denial that his acclaimed 2009 film, 3 Idiots, is based on Sonam Wangchuk, various theories have emerged online regarding the film's inspiration. For years, many believed that Aamir's beloved character, Rancho, also known as Phunsukh Wangdu, was modeled after the Ladakhi innovator. However, Sonam has consistently stated that this is not true, despite previously reaching out to the filmmakers to inquire about the character's similarities to his own life.

During an appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati with Amitabh Bachchan, Sonam Wangchuk sought to clarify the situation. He remarked, "If you say inspired, then I won't deny it. Many people claim the film is based on me, but I disagree. The more accurate term is that it may have been inspired or influenced." He emphasized that he does not wish to take credit for the film's success, stating, "I don't want people to accept something just because it is linked to a movie. Even if the film is influenced by me, I don't take pride in it. Conversely, if it isn't inspired by me, I have no regrets either."
Sonam has expressed that the constant comparisons are exhausting. In a separate discussion during a Josh Talks event, he shared, "I feel troubled because people frequently ask me, 'Is your school the one depicted in 3 Idiots? Are you Phunsukh Wangdu?' I want to clarify: No, I am not Phunsukh Wangdu. I am Sonam Wangchuk. My work is in reality, not in films."

After the release of 3 Idiots, Sonam received numerous emails congratulating him on 'his' film, with many claiming that his school was featured in it. Upon following up with his school, he learned that a film crew had visited but ultimately chose to shoot at a different location. Sonam decided to remain silent on the matter to avoid getting involved in the ongoing dispute between the filmmakers and author Chetan Bhagat.
Eventually, after the opportunity for legal action had passed, Sonam sent a letter to the filmmakers, reminding them of their previous meeting and expressing his disappointment at not being consulted. He noted, "They never replied, nor do I expect them to. I have more important things to focus on in life."

Aamir Khan's Clarification at the London Indian Film Festival
At the London Indian Film Festival, Aamir Khan reiterated that 3 Idiots is not based on Sonam Wangchuk's life. He clarified that the film's writers were unaware of Sonam while crafting the script. "Neither Raju (Rajkumar Hirani) nor Abhijat Joshi, nor I, knew about Sonam," Aamir stated, referencing a viral video from co-star Omi Vaidya that had reignited the discussion. He added, "Perhaps that's what Chatur was thinking, but... he's mistaken."
While denying any connection, Aamir praised Sonam's contributions, saying, "He doesn't need to be the inspiration for a character in 3 Idiots for us to respect him and his work. I wanted to clarify this from a factual standpoint." Aamir also expressed concern for Sonam's health regarding his ongoing hunger strike, hoping he would conclude his fast soon.
