Zubeen Garg's Supporters Demand Justice Amid Bail Controversy
Protest for Justice at Zubeen Kshetra
The protest came three days after the Gauhati High Court granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta
Guwahati, Oct 12: On Monday, family members, fans, and fellow musicians of Zubeen Garg gathered for a peaceful demonstration at Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, calling for justice for the beloved artist.
This protest was organized shortly after the Gauhati High Court granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta, one of the seven individuals implicated in the case.
The sit-in was led by the Zubeen Fan Club and saw participation from Garima Saikia Garg, Garg’s sister Paami Borthakur, and numerous supporters from various backgrounds.
Protesters held signs with messages like “Nyay Amar Odhikar” and “Nyay Amar Prapyo”, while singing songs such as “Diya Ghurai Diya” composed by the renowned artist.
Garima expressed that the family had faith in the judicial system for over a year, hoping the case would progress appropriately.
She referenced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s assertion that Garg had been murdered, indicating they believed he must have had evidence to support such a serious claim.
“We assumed he (Sarma) had valid proof; otherwise, why would a person in his position make such a statement?” she questioned.
Garima further accused Amritprava of manipulating evidence by deleting videos related to the case.
“We have heard that Amritprava deleted several videos. She tampered with evidence. How could someone who allegedly did this be granted bail by the High Court?” she questioned.
She also voiced concerns regarding the family's safety, questioning what protection they could expect if someone as beloved as Garg could face such a tragic end.
“If they can do this to Zubeen Garg, who has countless supporters, what might they do to us? These individuals are conspirators and murderers. Will they not target us as well? Where is our security?” she asked.
In response, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the government could not comment on the High Court's ruling.
Speaking to reporters in Chopaidong on Monday, Sarma emphasized the government's respect for the court's authority and expressed hope that the fast-track court overseeing the case would ensure justice.
“We cannot comment on any decision made by the High Court,” he remarked, noting that no accused had received bail in the main case over the past year at the Fast Track court.
The Gauhati High Court granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta on October 9 after extensive hearings from both sides. She is the first among the seven accused in the primary death case to be granted bail.
Mahanta’s attorney, Anand Kumar Bhuyan, stated that the bail was awarded based on merit, arguing that the chargesheet lacked sufficient evidence to support the claims against his client.
Her release is contingent upon fulfilling the necessary bail requirements. It is important to note that the bail order does not equate to an acquittal, and the case will proceed in the fast-track court.
