Intensifying Debate on Women's Reservation

A nationwide debate has erupted regarding women's reservation. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are accusing opposition parties of depriving women of their rights. Conversely, the opposition claims that the ruling party's intentions are not to empower women through reservation but to maintain their grip on power. With elections approaching in two states this month, the issue of female voters has emerged as a significant topic. Questions are now being raised about how many women candidates each party has nominated.

Reservation for Women: The 33% Quota

The women's reservation bill proposes reserving 33% of seats for women. The BJP is questioning the Congress-DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu and Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, alleging they have obstructed women's reservation. However, the TMC counters that they have already allocated more than 33% of tickets to women. The TMC is also challenging the BJP to disclose how many women candidates they have nominated.

Women Candidates in Bengal Elections

In West Bengal, the TMC has fielded candidates for 291 seats, with 52 of them being women, which constitutes approximately 17.86% of their total candidates. The TMC argues that they have consistently included women in their candidate lists, noting that around 40% of their MPs are women.

BJP's Low Representation of Women

The BJP has announced candidates for all 294 seats but has only nominated 33 women, making up about 11.22% of their total candidates. This is a decrease from the 38 women candidates they fielded in the previous election. The Congress has nominated 35 women, while the Left has put forward 34.

Women Candidates in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, a total of 442 women candidates have been nominated. The DMK has fielded women in 19 out of 175 seats. The BJP has nominated 6 women, while the AIADMK has put forward 21 women candidates from 170 seats. The Congress has nominated 2 women candidates from 28 seats.

Political Clash Between BJP and TMC

Prime Minister Modi has criticized Mamata Banerjee and the Congress in West Bengal regarding the women's reservation bill. He stated, 'The TMC has conspired with the Congress to block the passage of the bill that would provide reservation for women in 2029; women will punish them for this.' Meanwhile, the TMC is retaliating against Modi and the BJP, with a TMC MP releasing data showing that their party has given opportunities to over 37% women among their MPs, while the BJP has provided opportunities to less than 13%.
