Foundation Stones Laid for Key Infrastructure Projects
Vice President of India laying foundation stone of five projects worth Rs 1,010 crore in Meghalaya
Shillong, Sept 8: The Vice President of India, CP Radhakrishnan, has laid the foundation for five significant projects in Meghalaya, collectively valued at over Rs 1,010 crore, focusing on water, roads, health, and power sectors.
During a public event held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, Radhakrishnan emphasized the importance of Northeast India's development for the overall progress of the nation. He stated, “The advancement of the Northeast is crucial for India's growth.”
He highlighted the need for inclusive development, ensuring that no tribal communities are marginalized. Radhakrishnan stressed that growth must align with environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and sustainable practices.
Under the Act East policy, he pointed out that the government recognizes connectivity as vital for development, asserting, “Growth cannot occur without connectivity.” He noted that the region's prosperity hinges on physical, digital, and economic advancements, as well as fostering interpersonal connections.
In the past ten years, approximately 46,000 kilometers of rural roads have been constructed in the Northeast under the PM Gram Sadak Yojana, with an investment exceeding Rs 47,000 crore, he informed the audience.
Regarding the newly inaugurated maternity and children’s hospital in Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, built at a cost of Rs 31 crore under the National Health Mission, Radhakrishnan remarked that enhancing maternal and child healthcare is vital for nurturing a healthy and thriving society.
Additionally, the Vice President laid the foundation for the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme, which is set to cost Rs 850.58 crore and aims to provide safe drinking water to New Shillong City and surrounding areas.
Other notable projects include a 30-bedded AYUSH facility at Shillong Civil Hospital, estimated at Rs 10 crore, a power substation at Mawkhanu costing Rs 72.5 crore, a 110-meter bridge over the Umngot River valued at Rs 21.86 crore, and the Umsen-Barapathar road, which will cost Rs 56 crore.
