Unique Discount Offer by Kolkata Cardiologist Sparks Controversy
Controversial Discount Initiative in Kolkata
In Kolkata, a cardiologist's unconventional approach to patient treatment has ignited discussions and debates. Dr. Prakash Kumar Hazra, a well-known heart specialist, has announced that patients who chant 'Jai Shri Ram' at his clinic will receive a direct discount of ₹500 on their consultation fee. Reports indicate that on Monday, three patients took advantage of this offer by chanting the slogan.
Political Ambitions Revealed
Dr. Hazra has openly acknowledged his political aspirations behind this initiative. In a social media post, he expressed his deep inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He argues that 'Jai Shri Ram' has evolved from a mere religious chant to a powerful political slogan. However, this blending of politics with the sacred profession of medicine has raised concerns among civic society and opposition parties in the city.
Defending His Decision
In defense of his decision, Dr. Hazra stated that everyone has the right to hold political views. He cited the example of former Chief Minister and renowned doctor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, asserting that being active in politics while being a doctor is not wrong. He emphasized his long-standing commitment to serving the community and aims to provide relief to patients in need through this offer.
Political Aspirations and Discounts
Dr. Hazra clarified that his goal extends beyond just offering discounts; he also intends to play an active role in politics. He mentioned, 'I want to contest as a BJP candidate in the upcoming elections. Through this discount, I aim to provide relief to those in need and rally support for the BJP.' He specified that this discount applies solely at his private clinic and not at the hospital where he serves as a director.
TMC's Strong Response
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has reacted sharply to the doctor's post. Former TMC Rajya Sabha MP Shantanu Sen criticized it as a violation of the dignity of the medical profession, stating that every doctor takes an oath to treat patients without discrimination. He questioned the ethics of offering discounts based on religious slogans while wearing BJP symbols. This incident has sparked a new legal and social debate in Kolkata regarding the intersections of religion, politics, and medical ethics.
