Tipra Motha Party Plans Talks with BJP for Upcoming Village Committee Elections

Negotiations on Electoral Collaboration

Agartala, Sept 2: The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) is expected to engage in discussions with the BJP's central leadership in Delhi next week regarding a potential electoral agreement for the forthcoming elections to the village committees of the TTAADC.

According to TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma, there was no meeting held with BJP national general secretary (organization) BL Santosh and the party's Northeast coordinator, Sambit Patra, during their visit. However, a meeting between the two parties is anticipated in Delhi before the September 8 deadline for submitting nomination papers.

During his two-day visit aimed at assessing the party's election preparations, Santosh met with Chief Minister Manik Saha, state BJP president Abhishek Debbarma, and former state party president Rajib Bhattacharjee on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Santosh conducted a separate meeting with Saha, state BJP president, ministers, MLAs, and senior party officials at the BJP state headquarters to finalize the party's election strategy.

Debbarma mentioned that TMP MLAs and members of the district council (MDCs) have been instructed to promptly select candidates for all 4,599 positions across the 587 village committees.

He added that the party's election committee, led by general secretary Brishaketu Debbarma, convened on Tuesday and resolved to contest the village committee elections independently if necessary.

"We have directed our MLAs and MDCs to initiate the candidate selection process for all 4,599 seats. The party is also ready to participate in the elections alone if an alliance does not come to fruition," Debbarma stated.

The elections for the 587 village committees of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are set for September 28, with vote counting scheduled for October 5.
