Agartala, Apr 18: Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the founder of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), announced on Saturday that the party has received overwhelming support in the recent tribal council elections, emphasizing its commitment to advocating for the rights and future of the people.
In a remarkable outcome, the TMP secured victory in 24 out of 28 seats in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections held on Friday.
The BJP managed to win the remaining four seats, while both the CPI(M) and Congress were unable to secure any seats for the second consecutive time.
Debbarma stated, "The significant mandate we received reflects the people's recognition of TMP's dedication to their rights and future, and I remained steadfast on key issues throughout the campaign," during a press briefing.
Although the TMP and BJP are coalition partners in the state government, they contested the council elections independently. This council governs approximately 70% of Tripura's land area and serves a population of nearly 1.5 million.
He expressed confidence in the voters' intelligence, asserting that they can discern who truly advocates for their rights versus those who resort to intimidation and financial influence.
When questioned about the future of the alliance with the BJP following the council elections, Debbarma acknowledged the presence of capable leaders within the saffron party but suggested that some may have misled Chief Minister Manik Saha, resulting in a competitive election.
"The Chief Minister has now witnessed the election results and recognized the actions of certain leaders who transitioned to the BJP from CPI(M) after the 2018 Assembly elections. Why engage in underhanded tactics when we are allies? Why attempt to undermine opposition parties?" he remarked.
This statement follows allegations of the BJP's attempts to lure a minister and several MLAs from the TMP during the election process in March, which ultimately did not succeed.
Earlier, a TMP delegation, led by Debbarma, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu.
Debbarma noted, "The governor indicated he would consult legal experts and issue a notification for the oath-taking of the newly elected members and the executive council. We will act in accordance with the law once the notification is released."
In related news, Purna Chandra Jamatia, the chief executive member of the TTAADC, submitted his resignation as the council's term concluded on Saturday.
